Last night I performed with a couple of other Bens, Ben Drury and Ben Keough as part of the Enlighten festival. Our set started in dire straights as the rain set in over the parliamentary zone and we were told to pack down (the risk you run doing outdoor gigs). After a while we decided we would be able to set up again as the rain cleared. Instead of working with our original idea of creating a semi spatialised field of sound, we instead opted for a one speaker solution and cut down our instrumentation to electronics only. Originally, I planned to use my oud in combination with a kaoss pad to amplify and use as effect processor.
Instead, whilst Keough and Drury played synthesizer and drum machine, I used a microphone and all the effects I could find on the kaoss pad. We played for around two hours straight and at times it was taxing trying to figure out new ideas that were interesting and not just repeats of old material. We got through and made some cool sounds in the process. I took a few audio and visual recordings of some sections when they got really interesting. The projections were great as usual and it's always fun to work with the guys from the Art School. Fun night and hopefully there will be more like it in the future.
